I have never had this happen to me but this weekend while working on my boat I had what was, no lie, a fountain of gas shooting out of the vent and the fill cap.

As I put my boat away late in the season (Nov 3rd.)(30degrees) and this heat wave (85 here in wis.) that passed over us last weekend, the fuel expanded big time. I quickly aired out engine compartment and fired up the engine on the muffs for about 45mins to burn off the fuel..

Be sure to check very carefully those who store you boats with full tanks that leaks have not occured and an excess of fumes have accumulated in your bilges or damaged the sides of your boats by the vent and fill caps...

FYI

Re: Notice to Midwestern boaters.

Hello, I had the same thing happen to me about three seasons ago. The fuel expanded on the first warm day we had here in NJ. The boat was still on the trailer, the gas leaked out of the overflow and soaked my name decal on the transom. The decal was of course pealed and ruined. Ever since then I don't keep the tank more than 3/4 full during storage and I keep one of those "spill guards" attached to the vent when the boat is on the trailer or even in the slip. Never had a problem since. The leaky fuel will always drip into the container. No more mess. :) ......Also gave me a great excuse to get some very nice replacement graphics and decals made for the boat, like them much better than the old! :D

Yup BTDT with my partners boat. While on a fishing trip we filled up and grabbed some breakfast at the same place. My brother came in around 5:30am to get a cup of coffee and we got to goofing off with him instead of going out fishing. While eating lunch at camp around 3 PM we started smelling gas.. right out of the vent tube. boat had sat in the sun all day.

Link
