I noticed my battery needed to be charged up after every couple runs fishing and since the boat ran fine otherwise I didn't look too hard into it.

I found this today

From what I gather that is the rectifier. It had 3 wires connected 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 yellow with grey stripe.
It's off a 1982 Johnson J90tlcnb.
seems to start and run fine without it (I must have done 6 or 7 trips like this) but obviously I'd like to replace it.
I'll be calling the dealer on tuesday but is there a reputable supplier that ships to canada that someone can recommend?
Also, I'll probably need to find a wiring diagram since I don't have the service manual.

Yep thats the rectifier. It wont charge up without it and it will probably finish your stator off if you dont hook one up soon.

Iboats sells them, see if this site will ship to canada.
RE wiring its pretty straight forward, search this site and you should find how to do it.
I have forgotten but you basically hook it up to the wires coming from the stator that go to the terminal strip on the engines side.
IL see if i have a photo on file

Usually when the rectifier quits working, the tachometer starts to act up. (will read odd numbers, or not at all.)

Check the Top Secret Files at the beginning of this forum. They have wiring diagrams in there.
