Hello,
TLDR: When running this motor does water always come out the water exhaust when its running or just when the engine is up to temperature? (100F -130F)
I just bought a 16FT Steury with a 115EL76 1976 115HP Johnson outboard for fishing. The guy I bought it from had the boat out 12 times last year and it sat over the winter. I was the first one to take it out last weekend. I got up to speed and cruised around for a bit. When I put it back into neutral the engine idled ok but started throwing a bit of smoke and eventually idled down until it died. (it idled just fine in the no wake zone while loading)
I thought I may have flooded it because it didn't start right up again. We trolled around for a bit on the trolling motor and the motor fired right back up after about 30min and we were able to drive it back into the dock. (where it idled just fine again while we were unloading) I checked on the boat the next morning and saw a small (1in) splash of black oil under the motor which I assume is from flooding the engine and it was just the excess oil exiting the weep holes. I decided to run the boat on the hose muffs, it fired right up. I took a short video and never noticed water coming out of the water outlet. (It doesn't have a pee hole, just the outlet). I bought the service manual and it basically says to me that once the motor reaches 100deg the "Vernatherm element opens the valve allowing water to pass through the water discharge".
Does this mean that water will only exit the water outlet once the boat has reached 100 degrees? Sorry for the wall of text.
