Re: novice

I live in Cincinnati, so the first freeze is usually around the middle or end of Oct. The Marina I use will guarantee nothing will be wrong with it come spring if I get it to them before the first freeze, or they will fix it free. Also by then it is chilly enough around here that nobody wants to be out on the water, unless your fishing and I only fish probably two or three times a year so I will probably take it in the last week of Sept. or the first week in Oct. and try to beat the rush around here. Living in Knoxville I would guess that you would have most if not all of Oct. before you need to worry about freezing. Hope this helps, thanks

Re: novice

Sorry it's been so long since I posted, but its now pretty much winter here and being on the water seems like just a distant memory. just wanted to give some follow up to anyone who may be interested. Had the boat thoroughly tested when it was winterized and to my delight the only thing that seems to be wrong is that it is in dire need of a tune up. which I will have done when I get it ready in the spring. Had the drive pressure tested and was fine. Had all the oil changed and the mechanic said other than the tune up everything is in good shape. Had the horn go out at the end of the season and was able to replace it myself, and in the process got a good education on the 12volt system in that thing. Thanks for all your help. I'll post again in the spring and see whats up.

Even though the outdrive tested fine, keep an eye on it. I suspect your bellows are leaking. This would let water in and also ruin the top seal of your outdrive letting the gear oil into the bellows. You should pull the outdrive and be sure there is nothing in the bellows. My boat did not have a resevoir and the drive blew up because of this. After it blew up it held vac and pressure so the mechanic couldnt figure out how the lube got out till he dissassembled it

Re: novice

Here is a service bulletin regarding dieseling. My 4.3 does the same thing, I just let it idle for a couple minutes or so before shutting off and it's not a problem.

See Service Bulletin

Yup, I've witnessed this.
2 boats, one Bayliner 19' BR 4.3L merc and one Doral 19' BR with 4.3L volvo(I think).

While water skiing. Skier falls, slow, turn around to pick up skier and shutoff engine. Run on or dieseling almost everytime.

Letting it idle for a bit after slowing lessened the problem.

I don't agree that this is a solution though. Ya, that's what the service bulletin says but something is igniting the air/fuel mixture after the ignition is off. Maybe a plug is glowing (try cooler plug?) or a carbon deposit is. In an automobile this would be unacceptable and it's no different in a boat, IMHO.

Re: novice

Hey got a question for you guys. I guy I know told me that I should get and use a transom saver even on an inboard\outboard, he says it reduces pressure on your seals while your towing??? anybody else use one of these. I would have to probably rig it to the trailer as there is no roller right there.???

Re: novice

They make transom clips for I/O's the clip on your rams. I don't use nor to I know many that do. But it can't hurt.. now on my outboard motors I always use my transom-saver..

Hey you guys with the dieseling,

I have a 4.3L with a Weber carb and it diesels too. I am interested in any other problems you're experiencing. Things like : Difficult to start after the engine has been stopped for more than about 5 minutes (takes 20-30 seconds of cranking). Carb seems 'dry' or empty' after the boat has not been used for a few days (takes an age to start). And the dieseling if you don't let it 'cool off' for a minute before shutting down.

What I'm looking for is a common thread. It's seems to be the Weber 4bbls that do it. I think it could be that they are a squarebore carb installed on a spreadbore manifold. So it could be an easy fix if that's the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.............

Re: novice

achris, In answer to your questions. I installed a water seperator fuel filter on my '88 4.3LX last year. Up until then it would start after a week of sitting, with two pumps of the throttle an then turn the key. Now, after a week of sitting I need to pump the throttle while I am cranking it or it will not start. I am assuming that the gas in the carb dries up during the week of sitting, and the original throttle pumps with the key off, do not supply any gas. I do not know why the change has occurred.

I have the 4bbl Rochester BTW, and it restarts quickly no matter how long it was turned off. I do need to let it idle after a high speed run or it will diesel. :D
