ok i have a 1981 mercruiser 120 now it is all 2007 updated but why at idel it over heats only at idel, so i took off the hose from the lower unit and water does come out but only like a strem of water??/ so my ? is, is i/o mercruiser supposed to over heat??/ sorry if i misspelled anything

Ayuh,... Sounds like you need a New Impeller in the raw water pump...

Yep you either need a waterpump or you have a clog from an old pump grenading. Or a combination of the both.

ya everything is new from outdrive to motor.... ? now with out the motor running with muffs on water full blast, does water have to enter the motor or does water enter the motor only when the motor is on????

The impeller in the sterndrive only turns when the engine is turning.
That impeller will melt without water, in as little as seconds.
New impeller, operator starts engine, remembers to turn water on, too late, it's already unserviceable. If impeller shreds, the pieces of the impeller vanes must be removed from the water passages, or blockage will occur.
