Continuing the Switch box saga from: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=462933 I pulled the switch box today and found the following P/N: 337-4411. Then I researched the CDI Replacement and wouldn't just know, I have to have a full kit at over $400.00. Yep, "Lucky Me" . I don't know if all this is worth it.:( Guss I'm just a little disappointed. I'd still like a procedure if anyone has one for checking this box before I invest this kind of money. I'm not sure the other procedures were actually for this switch box. If I do have to replace it then this is the kit I have to get:

Part Number: 114-2986K 1
Name: MERCURY - (4 CYL KIT ONLY)
Replaces: 114-2986K 1 337-4406 337-4411 393-3736A78

It is for a 1971 Mercury Thunderbolt 800 S/N 3052262

I've taken pictures of my current switch box in hopes it may help others along the way.

Does anyone know of a less expensive fix?

If your switchbox is dead check this out.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-...1979283QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear
If your trigger is bad sometimes you can get lucky and get one at a fair price on ebay as well.
I apoligize for the miss info on your switchbox mine is a 72 80hp and they started using the 332-2986 type switchbox.Besides these 2 items (trigger and Switchbox )and the Stator probably are the most $$$$$$.
I wish you all the Luck.

After considering both short and long term of this issue I have decided to bite the bullet and go for the new replacement kit.

Hartleck, sorry I wasn't able to get back to you with the test procedure. The video card in my laptop quite on me and I had to fix it. I see that Laddies has posted one for you. He is probably one of the more knowledgeable members here when it comes to these older Mercs. Have you performed the test outlined in the post from Laddies? Can get real expensive real fast if you throw new parts into an engine without knowing for sure, what is wrong.

If you do go the route of the new kit, be aware that the rotor is NOT removable from the distributor shaft. You will break it if you try to pull it off, and that assy (rotor and shaft) is worth about $200 if you can find one.

would it be possible for this motor to be converted over to a newer ignition system?

Hartleck... as with most of us Merc. owners, we just bite the bullet and move on...

I have a CDI 114-2986 switch box, new still in the factory box if you need one.
I bought it for my 850 as I wanted to get rid of the old factory switch box and improve the ignition output, ya, also "lucky me" the 850 lost a piston before I got it put on.
paid $349 for it...will sell for $300 and I will pay shipping... norm stormmn@rconnects.com
