a huge thanks to the forum. I recently bought a 20 foot pontoon as a restoration project, mainly to fish from, and it has the 1988 nissian NS40C 40 HP motor on it I tested the compression befor I bought it and not sure what new is but it is 135/138 and I thought that should be close to a new motor and I started out with a new water pump and a lower unit service and new sparkplugs,On the first trip out it ran fine at WOT and
mid range but no idle to speak of so I spent a good bit of time reading through the
forum posts while I was waiting on a manual and a carb kit carb, and after a bit of
trouble shooting I found a bad fuel leak at the motor connector so I replaced the
tanks and fuel line as I had planed and added a new set of motor connectors, and
rebuilt the carb it now seams to idle fine on a set of muffs. The previous owner had
replaced the fuel pump so now it has a more or less new fuel system, from preivous
boats I know that 80 % or better of motor problems are caused by bad fuel
or old components, fittings sucking air and so on. I found the manual lacking on
carb settings and info, thier was no setting for the float height or the pilot air screw,
I made a guess on float hight as level and 1 1/2 turns on the piolt screw and it
seams to be fine , Ill find out tomarrow I plan on dropping it in the lake, but so
far I have found the design on the motor exclent, it is set up to service and work on ,
far better than any other I have had.
