nuetral rpm is to high?????

have a 84 Johnson seahorse70 hp. Everything works great ,got 5500 rpm on the wot. the idle is fine to when u start it ...Its just when u put it in gear rev or forward then back into neutral .. That it idles too high bout 2000rpms.. I then have to take the cowl off, and manually move the rocker arm about 8mm back to the idle speed screw. Then start the engine and it idles fine... turning the idle screw does not work ,ive already tried that..When I do that it idles to low or idles to high ,still leaving that 8mm space ,between the rocker arm and the idle screw... plezzzzzzze help!! Sick of taking the cowl off every time..ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GRRRRREAT!!!:facepalm:

Have you tried to adjust the throttle cable back on the mtr ?? There may be some slack in it.

Aye! My buddy's 50hp does that, annoying. I have an '84 75hp, great motors!! First thing that I would do is take off the throttle linkage, and set the throttle where you want it. Start the motor up and see if it stays there. If it does not you just may have to tighten the throttle arm bolt. Have you tried adjusting the throttle linkage at all?

I was thinking it might be the cable also...It does show movement(slack )a little .. The cables are old too
. They came with the control shift box .. Which is in great shape but , 84 model also .....I will try messing with the cable a bit .. Think I will invest in new cables soon though... Thanks much for all the great advice .. Will let you all know how it worked out.... p.s . Just lookd at my boat man. Almost positive u guys are right .. Looks like I did not take the backlash out of the cable . It said if I do not take the backlash out .The engine may not return to an idle speed...That's exactly!! What its doing.... Thanks again to both of you for the awesome advice....Will let u know when I finite............................

Oh my god its fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now what do I lubricate the throttle arm with ...white lithium spray or marine grease

Always marine grease. Keep it waterproof. Be happy that it was so simple.
