Simple enough Q (for those that know)

What is the correct nut (i.e. socket) size for Alpha Drive prop nuts ?

I have a very large Socket set, but as usual nothing fits the boat ... all mine are Metric, AF or Whitworth.

I measured across the flats and it is just under 1" 3/32"

So I'm guessing this a 3/4" UNC thread and thus 1" 1/8" spanner .. is this correct ?

We dropped imperial about 30 years ago in UK, and UNC didn't figure then either. (BSW, BSF & BA being the common ones) now all ISO Metric, which is a hell of a lot easier, but of no use on a US drive :)

So time to buy correct size.

Don, I'm not questioning your experience and knowledge here, but after seeing your post, I went to the basement just now, got a 1-1/16 12 pt Husky socket and tried it on the nut. (Alpha gen 2)

It won't go on. The socket is probably 50 years old but still clean and shiny, no rust or build-up inside. And the stock brass nut is fairly clean, just not reflective like a new one anymore.

I *could* hammer it on but that would be foolish.

In the past I've been using a 1-1/8 socket, thought it fit reasonably well.
I tried a lookup for hex nuts, all call for 1-1/8 across the hex flats.

There doesn't seem to be a distinction for UNF/UNC.

So you do use a 1-1/16" wrench on the job?

Every time I remove a prop off a 1 drive or an Alpha.

Ok, thanks, guys.
I'm gonna remove the nut and have a closer look at it tomorrow. Now I'm curious.

So is this classed as 1 1/16" UNC ?

I am traveling to US on business next week, and will try and pick up a socket.

Ayuh,... The nut is 1, 1/16" Outside,... That's the wrench size,...
Thread size pitch is pretty much irrevelant...
