Hi everyone,

As part of a re-wiring effort, I need a bunch of nuts to keep the wire ends on their respective terminals.

Does anyone know what sizes are the most common for the alternator, coil, starter motor etc? As I'd like to just get a bunch of them and be done with it.

Thanks!

What engine year, model, serial number are you working on ?

There usually are wide verities of material types, grades, lengths and sizes that also differ between metric & standard bolt and nuts wise on variant engine models.

A recommendation would be getting your OEM engine parts catalog, finding the part numbers for all the nuts and bolts you need, make a list and either order them up online or dealer, etc....Or if not wanting to order; 'in some to a lot of cases, the size, etc. etc. of the nut and bolts are listed in the "comment side" of the part numbers which may help you get the sizes you're looking for while out shopping your plan.

starter nuts are also generally brass. these can be either 5/16-18, 3/8-16 or M8 or M10 metric. then there is the S and I terminals. depending on if the starter is metric or imperial, the size could be M4 or M5 or #8 or #10

alternator could be 5/16-18, or M6. depending on the starter, there could be 3 nuts.

I found it best to live close to a hardware store as well as to have a large assortment of fasteners on the garage wall.

I think he is referencing wire nuts..... do not use them in automotive or marine wiring, they come loose with vibration. Use red, blue and yellow butt connectors, I mostly prefer the heat shrink ones in a boat since with a little heat gun waving they are tight and neat. What you need is a good pair of wire strippers and a decent wire crimp tool. Hit up your local Napa and they will have a rack full of the proper heat shrink butt connectors.

Yellow for 10 and 12 gauge
Blue for 14 and 16 gauge
Red for 18 and smaller

May not need red.

If you cut a wire to splice in then easiest to twist something like two 14 gauge wires together and use a yellow butt connector to crimp them down.

Hi everyone,

It's a 5.7 GM truck engine that I have set up for marine use.

I'm referring to nuts for things like the:

Slave solenoid
Oil pressure sensor

... and so on.

The issue is that many of the parts that I needed to buy were rusted on the old 5.0 Mercruiser, to the point where they were unusable... of those that I was able to salvage, they didn't seem to have nuts on the many of the bolts.
