I have a '77 115 hp Johnson o/b on a boat. The engine has been out of service awhile, and has had some extensive work done on it.

I put the boat in the water today for the first time in months. I was basically pleased with everything except a minor engine problem I encountered.

I have one of those throttle quadrants which enables you to pull the handle out, at the neutral detent, and then have full travel in neutral. My engine starts and idles with the throttle handle at about 20% of its total travel distance, in the neutral mode. The engine will die if I bring it back to the idle detent. Because of this, of course, I can't run in either forward or reverse.

The solution appears to be as simple as a throttle lever adjustment at the carb. However, the throttle adjustment screw is all the way in, and it won't go any more. Don't know if the screw in there is stock or not. I can easily put a longer screw in, and think that would solve the problem, as it would allow the throttle plate to be cracked open a little further.

Is there any reason not to try to solve the problem this way?

Is there anything else I should look to?
