This year I trailered my boat ('78 20' Grady White, Mercruiser 165 IL6), next year I plan on getting a slip and leave it in the water for the season. I am going to convert to FWC and am thinking of installing a reservoir for the outdrive. I don't know how they work exactly, but I am assuming it connects to the vent hole on the upper half of the drive and then you drill a hole in the transom (OUCH!) and run the tube to a container in the engine compartment. Does this sound right? Is it a worth while investment? I see them on ebay all the time. What does everybody think?

Hello
make sure it has the audible alarm switch for low oil level. they work and work well. they need to be drained and cleaned at each oil change but are well worth the money. when the Yoke seal fails and the upper unit oil drains in the bellows, without a resevoir your first indication is because it quit. your second is when a tech tells you your wallet is 2500 dollars lighter and he gets a christmas bonus.
Good luck and keep posting
