O-ring for tilt cyliner on 93 Force 120

I finally have gotten around to taking the faulty tilt cylinder off. It is leaking from the top of the cylinder and the o-ring that was previously used has disintegrated.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement o-ring?

Thanks

Bearing suppliers generally carry a fair range of o-rings. You may need to take the trim with you to get the correct size. Let them know what fluid you are going to use as with the o-ring. As I understand it they are made from different types of materials depending on what chemicals they will be used with.

Usually works out very cheap too.

Don't waste your time going to bearing and hydraulic houses. You'll never find it.

However, what you describe is a serious problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. That wiper keeps water out. Water inside your system will destroy it. You may already be in a situation where it is worth taking system apart just to flush out water.

1993 rams have a metric tilt head with a proprietary wiper size. Your best bet is to buy an older ram and swap it out. The Chrysler design (1980-1991) uses industry standard sizes and a complete seal kit is $20 off ebay. No matter what the condition, a Chrysler/Force ram can always be rebuilt for cheap. The only fatal problem for a 1980-1991 ram is a rusted out shock-eye or a rusted out piston.

1993 used ATF and you're a bit overdue for a complete rebuild anyway. ATF is red and it attacks the rubber seals under high pressure. 120HP is a big enough engine to generate high back pressure at full throttle. If it was my engine I would rebuild all the rams, flush pipes thoroughly, and refill with hydraulic oil. No need to worry about your pump. That tall skinny pump is the most trouble free and durable design ever used on any Chrysler, Force, Mercury, or Mariner engine. Its only weakness is that if the rams seals split from atf and put out debris then the pump needs to be rebuilt along with the rams. It is very sensitive to debris shards.

Your second best bet is to swap shock and lift cylinder caps. You can buy 1980-1991 shocks off ebay for cheap. Heck, I throw 5-10 of them away every year. So you don't care if your shock ram gets fubar because of water intrusion. However, this is just a delay tactic. Your shock is just as old as your lift. It can't be too far behind before that tilt head breaks as well.

Hope that helps. BTW - once that system is rebuilt and filled with hydraulic oil it is one of the best TnT ever made.

Thanks for the replies gents. Let me add a little more information because I was not that descriptive when I posted this thread. I have a 1993 Force 120HP engine. The tilt/trim system consists of two power tilt cylinders and one power trim cylinder. The starboard tilt cylinder is the culprit. The disintegrated o-ring is the top outer o-ring that seals the cap to the main cylinder body (not the wiper o-ring). Everything else on this lift cylinder looks fine. I have attached a pic that should help clarify what o-ring I am talking about. I wish someone on-line sold these OEM.

yes, exactly. The top seal outer seal is proprietary. You will never find it. Don't waste your time looking. If you jerry-rig something that doesn't keep out water then look for total system failure in the near future. Just swap the entire top assembly from your shock and your tilt. You don't care if the shock gets water in it and dies. Go to ebay and buy a used chrysler shock for $10. You can use any Chrysler or Force shock or tilt ram from 1972-1994 on your boat. The best ones are 1983-1992. None of the internal parts from your metric threaded tilt ram will fit an SAE threaded chrysler ram.

oops. might be my bad. you mean the tilt head to tilt body seal?
That is a standard metric oring. Any hydraulic shop that stocks metric seals should have one on hand. Stay away from cheap orings as might be found at the local hardware store or harbor freight. Buna70 is fine for that seal. However, you should make sure that you can fix the actual problem before going off to buy that seal. That particular seal never breaks unless you take the ram apart.

Hi pnwboat,
I looked up the link and even though the diagram isn't exact the o-ring is illustrated and available from Merc.

Thanks a lot!!

I've also had some luck with shops that repair hydraulic cylinders for contruction equipment. I just bring in the part(s) and if possible, the old torn up O-ring and they can usually match them up.

the oring from a band collar style ram will not fit the ram with a cast hydraulic port.

if it is the main body seal then a good hydraulics shop should have it. The main body seal is standard. Grainger and Fastenal would have it. If it is the outer head seal aka debris wiper aka rod wiper aka upper piston shaft seal ... then it is not available.

It is the main body seal and the link pwnboat supplied has it.

Thanks

its the wrong size. you'll do more harm than good if you try to force it.

part #23 in that diagram is a band collar. Metric tilt rams were never made with a band collar. You will get an inch size oring that is too large and will either not seal or lead to thread damage.

According to the diagram it is not the wrong size. I should have it by the end of the week!!

after it comes in and doesn't fit then go to grainger and ask for a metric size 2x35

You are correct. That o-ring from that diagram is not the right size. There is a Grainger not too far from my house, but I called them and they do not understand what a metric size 2x35 is...

Thanks RRitt!!

Martin requires a $10 minimum order, but I found the same O-rings for less.

it is not a quality sensitive spot. This is a situation where a hardware store oring is good enough.
