Re: o ring on main shaft

Hi Chicken
The o-ring is shaped like a cheerio. There is another piece of rubber, looks like a slice of hose (round with flat sides). This is called the pump housing gromet. The gromet (or slinger) fits down on top of the pump housing. The o-ring rides in a groove up near the top splines on the drive shaft, So as to help seal out water and exhaust derbris from this joint. Do not forget to use anti corrosion greese on the splines only. Do not get greese on the end (top) of the shaft. This can cause a hydrolic pre-load on your bearings.

If it's the one I think it is it stays near the top, there should be a groove below the splines that it sits in. If you're looking at an exploded view it probably looks like it should be part of the pump but it isn't, those drawings are quite confusing!
The ring is there to help seal out water from the splines, put plenty of grease all over the top of that shaft before you replace it.

Good point alcan, about putting the grease just on the splines and not the top of the shaft, I knew what I meant but the words don't always convey what I mean!
