O ring?

I am replacing the water pump on a 92 evinrude 15 hp. I have almost everything back together but the instructions say to put the smaller o ring (5/8x3/32) on the drive shaft. Does it go on the top or the bottom of the shaft? Thanks.

It goes on the top, just below the splined part if there is a groove. If there is no groove, the o-ring is inside the crank so you don't need it.

BTW, you still need to grease the splines with Moly Lube or equivalent.
