Hello everyone!

New/first time boat owner! So my first boat is a rough (very rough and my wife hates it and I’m getting a lot of “I told you so’s” and “money pit” on my first boat. Hindsight is 20/20 and I have live in the right now. Long story short, the motor I thought was good to go is shut off while running (1961 Johnson / Evinrude 18hp outboard). My brother is confident we can get this fixed with either a Sierra kit or replacement of lower unit. In the mean time and for emergencies I need to get my oarlocks fixed. I nearly got stuck on a windy and wavey lake when my motor shut off (rubbery burning smell, didn’t want to risk turning it back on) so I rowed like a mile against the wind. Half way through one of the oarlocks busted (when it rains it pours) praise God we made it back. Now, I need to get that fixed. Should a fiber glass boat have oarlocks? If not I wanna thinking of rigging it like this: 2x4 on inside and outs of top boat wall. Then place thick board where corner oarl l ok is and securely bolt down to the two 2x4’s. Attach oarlocks to this board. Thoughts? Better ideas? Thank you very much.

Welcome to the forum! The experts here are great and can help you with any issues. My only tri-hull was heavy and I question the use of oars except maybe for repositioning at the fishing holes. To each his own but I would look hard at small auxiliary/kicker motor (3-6hp) on a retractable mount for better backup. Good luck!

Well I guess technically you can row pretty much any boat . Some are just easier to row than others ..
make a couple more post so then you can add some pictures .. That will help us help you .
You can also post your outboard problems over in the Johns/Evinrude section of the forum .
I’m sure they can help you out . Hopefully the motor was pumping water and it didn’t run hot ..

If you know someone that can weld it would be easy to fabricate that broken oar lock

I agree , pick up a new set , epoxy in a nice 2x2 about 12” long ,drill new hole and though bolt together ..
You may need to shape the wood some for a good fit to tuck under the rail ..
