ok took your advice, went shopping, now prices are within budget, but when it says complete steering package, does that mean I only need to connect this package to my console and motor, then attach steering wheel, and then it is done?i have console, wheel and motor, also I am a tool and die maker so making necessary bracketry is not an issue if needed, will that package be enough?

thanks :D

I have a 74 toon with 25 hp Evinrude, need new steering cable, will "teleflex cable" work?

Just make sure it's compatable with the helm. You would probably be better off just getting the whole steering set up. You can pick one up for around $180 to $200. Plug in the new helm and add the cable. Simple. Check out the iboats store for kits. Ya' just need to know the length of the steering cable.

Basically that's it salty.....Install the helm at the console, run the cable and attach to engine. Does your engine have a steering tube or is there a bracket mounted to the transom to hold the steering cable? Either way, it should just take the place of the old steering set up.

Keep us posted on how ya' do or if ya' got anymore questions.

I have a bracket mounted to the transom, also I have noted that they require a length for the cable, I can pretty much make that what I want, just not too long or I will have problems, my old one was way too long...any advice, rule of thumb?

thanks :)

Hi salty....measure the exact route the cable will take from helm to engine. A tape rule works well for this. Take the measurement to whom ever your going to get the kit from and they should be able to figure out what length you will need. Oh....and don't forget to tell them if its' a steering tube or transom mounted bracket. Should work out for ya'. :)

When I had to measure my cable, i pulled a 3/4" rope in the boat all the way. Go to teleflex web site and look at the mechanical steering section. Be aware a 15" cable is not the length of the plastic jacket. They have a guide to help determining right length. There also is a PDF Tech document with photos of all kind of old steering helms and cables and type number of the cables of today that replaces them. Maybe you can do with a cable. Complete steerings are at blowout sales several places aro 150 $ Good luck
