And, are you asking if you should use the external reservoir or not?

I have had both. The lube monitor is nice. I wouldn't stay away from a boat that didn't have it though. Most of it will depend on the year.

Up to 1991 (introduction of Gen II drive) oil bottles were a not too often used option. When the Gen II came along they became a) better, as they used internal lines rather than an external line attached through the vent port, and b) still optional on the 3 litre engines. Personally, I like, but there are still a lot of boats without them.
