I just picked up what looks to be a near mint Mercury 500, (It was so cheap I bought it even if it only turned out to be parts). The new stainless prop was worth what I paid for it.
What I noticed once I got it home, is that its an odd length motor, somewhere between my 20" long 1981 Mercury 50hp and my short shaft, 15" 1977 Mercury 500. The mid section looks like the long shaft model but the lower matches the short shaft. Were there different years that could be combined to make odd length motors? If I measure my 1982 from the bracket to the anticav plate, it's about 21", if I measure the 1977 short shaft motor, I get 15.5", this one I just picked up measures 18", pretty much right in between the two. It came with a load of old parts, several drive shafts, gear sets and other odds and ends, so I have no idea what was swapped around.
Either way, it runs great, no problems there, I'm just curious why the different lengths?
