odd request

This is an odd request- but I'm not sure where else to post it- We have built a large wood ramp for our high school marching band to use as a prop. To make it movable- we used boat trailer (tongue) jacks and wheels mounted on it so it rolls easy (and the wheels can be cranked up and down)- Works great on hard surface but here is the issue: It does not work well on grass - Does anyone know if we can swap out the existing hard, plastic wheel with something with studs or knobs on it? (or some type of tire that would work better on grass?) thanks!

Re: odd request

It's doubtful the caster on that trailer tongue jack would accomodate a much wider or larger diameter wheel....maybe modify it to accept a riding lawnmower wheel or a solid wheelbarrow wheel or similar. Check over at Northern Tools to see what they might have to help you! Good Luck!

You can also look into replacing the whole jack set-up to one with a wider, fatter wheel. It's no where near the size of a lawn tractor, but probably double what's on there now so it may make it easier. Another option would be to look into finding or having someone fabricate a "trailer mover". It's used by boatyards/marinas/etc. much like a "jack" that has a ball the trailer hooks into and the "jack" has a couple of wheels to help manuever it. Sorry, but I don't know the actual name of the thing, but you could call your local boat dealer and ask about it.

The perfect forum for this discussion is Non-Boating Tech. I will move it there.

Here at OP High School for the band props we went to Harbor Freight and bought some castors that were about $7.00 a piece and mounted them to our stage props. They were easy to mount and make the props roll easy.

When we bought them, we bought 50 and got them at a huge discount by talking to the store manager.

Good Luck and hope this helps.
