Odd Tachometer Problem on '95 Johnson 115

The tachometer works perfectly fine at idle and seems to give about the right reading. As i increase throttle it steadily moves backwards to zero around 1/8 throttle. I assume this means I need to replace it, but i'm hoping someone has any idea why this is happening.

Probably tach. However, is your engine charging the battery?

Now that you say that I remember having some alternator problems last year. It will charge but not very well it seems. if I made short trips a lot I would end up having to hook it up to the charger
