Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

Greetings, I was taking apart my Merc 1999 Alpha One lower unit to change the water propeller and when I dropped the lower unit, I noticed two extra parts that I can not figure out where they go. I wish I knew how to attach a picture, but they look like stainless shims. They are about two inches long, have 5 small hole drilled, one side is an oval shape and the other is straight. Has anyone else seen something like this?
Thanks
Marty

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

those are the remnants of your exhaust flapper(s)

they are mounted in the y-pipe and fail when there is an overheat/lack of cooling water passing through the exhaust

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

thanks guys, but I have never run this engine w/o either being in the water or using the muffs when rinsing salt water out. Be it as you say, I need to do what next. This doesn't sound good and I guess I am fortunate I am doing my annual maintenance to further damage the motor. I hope.

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

no big problem, just install new ones

they are located at the top of the y-pipe and take about a half hour to install

do a search here to get some info/instructions and perhaps an oem manual to download

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

thanks again. I have a 1999 Maxum with a 3.0L, Merc I/O. I also have a Seloc service manual and I still can not figure out were the exhaust flappers are. I really do not like this manual. Please advise I am not familiar with this boat beyond routine maintenance. The only thing I can figure is the water pressure to the muffs may have not been enough volume to cool the engine one time.

Please tell me where these flappera are located on this 3.0L merc. Also, do you think West Marine will have them?

Pull the exhaust riser (not the manifold) and it (not they as it's not a V-8) is at the far end of the rubber exhaust connector. West Marine should/may have them probably PN 18-2733. They can also be had from NAPA auto parts same PN.

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

I think I am closer, but have a clarification. I see that my 4-cylinder has one exhaust manifold and this connects to a u-pipe that goes up and then down, This u-pipe is then attached to a rubber cupling and then to another pipe and then another rubber coupling and then out to the transom. Is the exhaust riser the metal u-pipe that goes up and then down to the coupling? if So is there going to be a gasket on the exhaust riser? sorry for such elementary questiong, you probably think I'm stupid and right now I feel that way.

Bond-O you are the best and I have two other issues now. I removed the riser and it appears to be pretty much shot. The corrsosion inside is probably what let go of the flappers. I would feet better if I had a new riser. It has part number 12076 stamped on it. Can you recommend a location to purchase one? Also, when I took off the outdrive to grease the two universal joints. I notice they do not have grease fittings. It looks like someone screwed a plug into the threads. I can not get the plugs out. Are these sealed bearings which don't need grease. Again, its a 1999 Alpha One outdrive with a 3.0 4-cylinder engine. I heard that a any grease is better than no grease at all. thanks again for your assistance.

Ayuh,... You can poke around Here,....

The u-joints probably are non-servicable, they make 'em that way now-a-days....
If replacin' 'em, I believe you can still get greasable joints...

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

...I also have a Seloc service manual and ....

:facepalm: (Seloc = hand wipes, toilet paper, or fire starter, NOT a service manual!)

Download these for the real thing....

Engine -> http://www.4shared.com/document/xEKlzP-s/Service_Manual_26.html
Drive -> http://www.4shared.com/document/dPQUcyn_/Service_Manual_14.html

At 12+ years old I would be very surprised if that riser was serviceable. They are usually replaced at about 5-8 years....
While you have the riser off, have a good look into the water passages in the manifold, I would even take the end caps off (if you have end caps, some manifold are single piece)....

Re: Oh Boy, I have extra parts ???

I have ordered from here with good success. Like Chris mentions, be sure to check your manifold as well. You can search the site I listed for prices on their manifolds as well.
