i've been stalled out on my rebuild, and brought her home so icould build at night after being with the family. Brought it home wednesday, and had a storm over night which left the keel i just placed in under water. I had to drill out a small hole in the transom to drain, but didn't coat or put a proper plug in. The keel is a 3 piece laminate of 3/4 marine ply, and the transom a 2 ply. It has been under water all day, with only a single coat ofglass resin on it . Is all lost???? Or can i let it air dry and get to it again. I have to finish the keel by encapsulating with glass still, or is this going to affect the keel and transom enough to doom the project. Thanks all, hoping for the best

Re: Oh God

its toast the project is doomed !

send it to me and ill get rid of it for you ! :D

your fine....really.

as long as the glass was mostly cured and properly installed your good to go.

BUT>>>>>

after you drain the boat totally (not a drop or film of moisture).....put a few big fans in there for a few days.
if it gets cool.....put some heat lamps in (not directally on the glass, but using the heat of the lamps for the fans to blow around)

just consider it like you are drying the plywood before using it.

oh.......and build a tent over it.

cheers
oops

it may set you back a few days....but you will be fine.

Re: Oh God

as far as the garboard plug.......really dry that area well. the wood must be totally dry or the rot will start in a few weeks.

(you actually would have been better off using a wet vac to remove the water instead of drilling an unprotected wood)

so keep a fan on the hole

Re: Oh God

Many Thanks Oops for the prompt reply. I'm on the way out the door to get an industrial fan at the shop. Is there any chemical i can purchase and place in the hole to draw out the water. The humidity here in southern ontario is near 90% for the last few days , and probanly the next few weeks.I'm thinking the fan may not do it, Regards

Re: Oh God

Here is what i got into the vessel tonight after shopvacing. Very slight puff of air coming out the transom hole. Luckily, when i drilled it out to drain , I drilled under size by a 1/4 inch or so . My hope is that after a few days drying time covered, well now in tarp, that i'll drill to the full size and get rid of any moist wood.Thoughts?

Thx again

Re: Oh God

Been there, done that :D Flush that hole with a healthy dose of acetone or xylene to help draw the water out/dry it. That's what I did, and then after it was dry, promptly installed the garboard drain and sealed it up with 4200 and some fiberglass.

If the glass gets milky white on top after it dries out and you aren't doing any more glassing, don't worry about it too much. If you have to do more glassing, then you will want to sand off the areas that are milky to get proper adhesion.

That silver disk is a fender washer that I used on the bolt holding the transom to the skin. It was stuck in place by a little extra PL adhesive.

Fortunately for me, the only thing that had been done at this point was gluing the wood to the transom skin...no stringers and the nose was down so the water collected in the boat, but wasn't up against the wood.

Re: Oh God

And since your boat resto is toast, you wont be needing that fan. I will get that out of the way for you if you like. It was 100 deg yesterday!

:D I think we've got a lot of great tutorials here, I'm just happy to be able to contribute and have the kind of knowledge and perspective that can be helpful more than not.

Many Compliments to all who offer advice and experience to those of us just starting out.

She's been 3 days with the fan on , acetoned today 28 celcius and sunny, warming up and getting more humid this week. I should be dry enough to restart by mid week.

You guys really gave me peace of mind when i was panicked on this one. I'm grateful, hopefully i can get her in the water yet this summer.

That's the duty of everyone with experience and knowledge in life. My mom always told me that she'd only give me advice, not tell me what to do, because ultimately I was going to make the decision and run with it, good or bad.

If I was smart, I heeded her advice. :p

Re: Oh God

Hello everyone,

Happy to report she's dry as can be so i can continue with the rebuild. I've got to grind off a 2 inch width of csm i put down in the corner of the keel, full length, with waxed resin. The guy who sold it to me said sanding and acetoning between layers would be enough, but i'm not sure now. I'm off to Composites Canada tommorow to re-supply. To do this keel stringer, she's only goy one, and the gusseting for the transom; should i use csm and 1708? How many layers should i use? (cvx 16 yamaha 115), in what order should i lay them?etc. Any advice on this would be great !

Thx muchly

Re: Oh God

ok....

if the PO used waxed resin...

you want to sand the wax off.....then clean with a vacuum and acetone.

as far as the transom......

what do you have on there right now?

if there are a few layers of csm on it......sand/grind as above and a full wrap of 1708 with waxed and your done. also use a larger layer of 1708. as the overlap can be used for tabbing the transom to the hull.

where in canuckville are ya?

Re: Oh God

Hi Oops

In Burlington ,Ontario. Just a single layer on the transom and keelat the moment, which i will scuff through, but i did have holes which were repaired with the same waxed, but i did sand and wipe with acetone between each layer. The transom will need stiffening with gussets as well, so should i go 3 full layers on the keel ,starting with a 4 inch , then 8 inch then foot width? !and then 3 layers on transom and transom gussets for reassurance?
