ok, I think I'm in trouble. I not yet found a manual for this engine and somehow the shifter snapped off. So I have no idea how it connects or what's inside. Is there a bell crank under the power head? Do I have to remove the power head to fix this as I would in an OMC? As it was a salty am I in for big trouble getting the power head off? Any ideas or comments? Thanks.

So nobody has an idea about this engine? Or a parts diagram huh. Dang. Guess I'll start tearing it apart blind.

Re: Oh oh - Yamaha 5hp 5CS shifter snapper off!

I am currently working on my 5CS (6E3 S 148045), it is in a bad state i picked it up for free from a mate who wanted to toss it. The lower unit was dry for many months everything from the water pump down was siezed, anyway i putting the biuts together, got good compression and spark, will get to carb soon, an i think she will go good.
So i am good for info about the gears etc in the lower unit, if that is where your problem is, but i am not familiar with the shift conectors etc near the head but i will chase this down for you and see if we can get you started.

So, is it that your gear shift lever snapped off right?

Yep, the manual shifter snapped off about 1/4" inside under the powerhead. I think the engine fell on it. So it's stuck in neutral. Have you had your powerhead off at all? Do you have a manual for it?

No steve i haven't got that far yet, the manual i have has no reference to the gear shift, strange isn't it.

Yes you have to take the powerhead off to change it.
There is two o-rings on the shifters shaft, leave the inner of the o-rings away when you put the new shifter in place. It works much better with one o-ring. Also clean the hole before you put the new one in.
And remember to grease it often from the grease nipple.

Here is a picture of it:

Thanks for the pic. I think I need part # 21 unless I can get it welded.
