Check out the oil after running my 18hp. I'm using 24:1 ratio. What's going on here?

Long story shortened: I have been running with the wrong thermostat gasket. it was covering up the hole that delivers water to the thermostat. i knew the motor has been running hot but couldnt figure out why. i could have sworn it was moving water after i replaced the impeller just recently. so under the hood the head is too hot to touch until i drilled out a hole in the gasket. now it moves a ton of water and it is not too hot to touch anymore.

could running hot have caused the oil situation? i assume the oil is from unburned oil/gas mixture with the gas running down the leg leaving the oil behind.

surprisingly enough compression in both top and bottom cylinders was 90 (cold). i also followed the pistons up and down with a rod and there was no play at all for either one. whilest checking for something on the exterior of the motor that might cause the knocking sound, i discovered that the lower case had two broken bolts on the back side that had some play in it that might be the source of the sound. doubt it though since it has apparently been like that for a long time. i shimmed it with some popsicle sticks for now since replacing those bolts is going to be a problem due to corrosion. will check in after the next test run. btw the sound only occurs about once every 20 or 30 seconds.

Maybe that's where the black stain is coming from.
