I have a 1996 mercury outboard, 135 hp, 2.0,v-6
the intermitant oil alarm is going off, constantly
I thought it was the high temp alarm at first and changed the impellor in the lower unit. placed the boat back in the water let it run for 20 minutes and the alarm did not sound. I thought it was fixed, later that day I took the boat out and cruised around for about 4 hours, no alarm. Next day, went to the marina, started the boat backed out of my slip and started to go, when the alarm went off again. now every time I start the boat, 20 seconds later the alarm starts. My friend says it is a oil alarm. I investigate and find there are 2 oil sensors comming off of the warning module one to the oil cap and one to a sensor where the oil and fuel line both enter the engine. First I checked the plugs to see if they had oil on them and they did. Then I disconected the blue wire w/ white stripe going to the cap on the oil resivoire on the front of the motor. The alarm kept going off. I replaced the wire and disconected the same color wire comming from the warning module going to the other sensor above where the oil and fuel line both enter the motor. still the alarm kept ringing. replacing that wire and diconected the white wire comming from the warning module and going to the sensor I just mentioned. still the alarm rings. I placed a ohm meter on the wires, but I am not sure what they are suppose to read, could you tell me. today I took a chance that the sensor in the cap was and put a brand new cap/sensor on and the alarm still goes off. the oil tank in the hull of the boat( 96 searay 19 1/2 foot) is full and so is the resivour on the front of the motor itself. disconected the line comming from the resivour and started the motor for 5 seconds and it is definatly pumping oil. all lines seem to be clear and no bare spots in any wires.

Check the warning horn under the dash. One of my buddies had the same problem with a 95 150 horse fast strike Johnson. I found the horn itself had some burn marks under the epoxy/plastic cover. Simple replacement. Don't know about the Merc, but the horn for the Johnson was $43.

You need a peak read meter and OEM service manual, I posted some info for Woodman look at that post. You have to check signal from oil pump sensor and power pack output to primary side of coil.
