Oil change...a question

I had been using one of those vacuum oil changers, jamming the hose as far as it will go before the 90 degree bend near the bottom.

My mechanic pointed out this fitting on the top of the tube that allows a garden hose to be used? It has been taking about 2 hours to get 5 quarts out, but he says it should only take a few minutes this way. Any thoughts?

The issue is to get it all out. No matter what hose or tube, the idea is to suck it all out by having the sucktion point at the very bottom of the pan. A normal garden hose easily sucks itself flat.

BTW: If the oil is (luke-)warm it flows a lot easier.

The garden hose fitting is for using an electric oil change pump like the jabsco. Instead of sliding the tube down the dipstick you screw the jabsco onto the dipstick tube and flip the switch on the pump. It sucks just about everything out. I use it to change the oil in trucks too. When I first used it on my Diesel I then pulled the drain plug to see how much was left and there was hardly anything.

You can do a search here on iBoats or West Marine for Jabsco and oil and you'll see what it looks like. They are used by most of the Marine shops around here. I think it is called the "porta-quick oil changer"

I have a little hand operated pump that i got at Walmart that has the hose fiting on it or you can use the long hose.I screwed it on the garden hose fiting and pumped away on it.It took 5 mins.maybe and got all but i/2 culp.I know this because I then pulled drain plug in my 4.3 cobra and 1/4 cup is all that came out.I only gave like 14.00 for it.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the info guys. I didn't buy one of those electric pumps because the guy at West Marine said they were the most returned unit they had, but maybe I'll check around and find one more reliable.

If you go to westmarine.com, find the oil pumps - there are several - be sure to read the reviews. These (I assume) are done by you & me and offer some insights. I ended up making a purchase (Oilboy) but just got it and haven't used it yet. It came with 2 different tubes and a garden hose adapter, so it should work on most anything?

I use the Jabsco hand pump that screws right on to the threaded dipstick. It sucks it dry in about 10 minutes.

I borrowed a hand pump from a buddy of mine - I believe it was made by Quicksilver. It was made of brass, and screwed onto the dipstick fitting. It pulled 6 quarts out inside of 5 minutes, easy. I read the reviews on West Marine, and no one had anything good to say about the oil change pumps. I would definetly recommend the one I used (but I doubt you can all borrow it from my buddy)!

That's great. Where do I find one of these hand pumps? I have a West Marine and a Boaters World near me, so I wonder if they carry them?

You can also buy a Jabsco oil hose drain kit like the newer Mercruisers have. This will fit OMC or other engines and allow you to drain the oil from a permanent hose that you can pull through the transom drain. The hose has a special fitting that replaces the fitting at the bottom of the dipstick.

This kit is also available from WestMarine, etc.

This is funny. Last year I bought this hand pump to fill my manual transmission with. It happens to have that fitting for the dipstick tube. Guess what, it works! Took me about 10 minutes to suck out the oil. Sure beats 2 friggin hours with that other vacuum pump.

Re: Oil change...a question

Can someone tell me why all I read about regarding oil changes is the "threaded" top of the dipstick tube I have a volvo penta 4.3 that is just like a car's dipstick no threads at all is there a device that would work on this motor?

StarBaby, just use a standard vacuum oil pump with the dipstick tube. It'll take forever, but will get the oil out. There might be some other way to plug up the dipstick tube, but someone else will know about that.
