I see different extractor pumps on the market all the way from about $20 to $200. Any recommendations out there?

And while I am at it, unscrewing the oil filter on my 4.3 is a pain in the neck. Any good oil filter wrenches out there that give good torque while standing on your head? Sure would like my Tacoma engine in there with the oil filter on top.

Re: Oil Change Extractor

I have a Moeller unit like these that works really well on GM V-6's and V-8's. Screw the extractor onto the top of the dipstick tube, pump it up and it sucks everything right out. Pretty easy.

The reason I specify GM engines is that I don't know if it works the same way on others. On my 5.7 V-8 and 4.3 V-6...

1. When you remove the dipstick the extractor screws onto the top of the dipstick tube, instead of having to push the extractor tube down through the dipstick tube to get to the sump.

2. The dipstick tube on these GM engines runs all the way down to the bottom of the sump, so you suck up all the oil.

If you do this job with the boat OUT of the water, there are kits that replace the the oil pan drain plug with a shutoff valve and a length of hose. You remove the boat's transom drain/garboard plug, fish the hose out through the transom, then open the valve. The oil runs right out the back of the boat into your container. I've never used one, but they sound like a nice way to do it.

After fiddling with several pumps and having them fail . . . I went the cheap route and re-used some plastic buckets with lids that I had lying around.

I rigged up a vacuum-assisted siphon, using the bucket, some tubing and a shop vac. That way my hands are free to sip my beer while the oil is extracted.

I use the same set-up on the car as well.

A 4.3 is NOT an outboard...... moving thread.
