I have a 1987 wellcraft with a chevy 350. I bought this boat 3 years ago and did an oil change before putting in the water but i remember it being tough to get the drain plug out and dripping oil in the bilge that i had to clean out. I have been meaning to change the oil these last couple years. I figure spring is the time to do it. I saw at my marina today they had a sale and i see these oil change pumps. I am pretty sure i have threads on my dipstick tube. Has anyone tried one of these pumps? Do they work well? Do they get most of the oil out? Do you find them easier than trying to fanagle a drain pan under the engine?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and merry christmas

I use the one in the link below. Don't use the screw on attachment just put the hose straight on the dip stick tube and secure with a hose clamp. The pump is the only way to go.

Mine is a hand operated vacuum pump, the tube just goes in the dipstick tube and does not thread on. It works great just warm the oil up good.

Re: Oil change question

i use one like bspeth describes. it works great and i wouldn't be w/o it. what i got is a tempo oil extractor, like the one in this utube. however i use the tube down the oil dip stick hole since i have no place to connect the oil sipone to on my engine set up. i also can't remove the oil drain plug w/o raising the engine, so an some type of oil extractor is almost a must have item.

actually, fall, prior to winter layup is the time to do it. the oil gets contaminated from the combustion process during the summer and it's best to not store it with these contaminates in the oil. there for ya change the oil around the last run of the season.

Thats an interesting point. I had figured i didnt want to let fresh oil sit around all winter getting that white milky stuff in it. Id rather dump the contaminated oil in the spring before taking the boat out. I mean it only sits in the pan all winter how bad can it be? I dunno. I guess either way works. Good thinking though. I never thought about that.

Ayuh,... As Ziggy said, combustion by-products contaminate the oil with metals, 'n acids, which is All through-out the motor in the oilin' system,...

Changin' it in the Fall, 'n doin' a short run-time to check for leaks, pumps Fresh Clean oil through-out the oilin' system,...

A tiny bit of condensation(water) formed over winter will burn off/ steam outa the oil, in the 1st half hour run of the season,...

Donno where yer gettin' "that white milky stuff in it.",.... unless ya got something else goin' on,...

Re: Oil change question

I have a solid lifter cam in my drag car and in the fall i pull the valve covers to loosen the rockers. In the spring when i pull the valve covers i see this white milky crap all over the inside of them. I am assuming condensation? But i leave the old oil in it all winter and dump it before starting it up in the spring. The only place the oil sits all winter is in the pan so im not concerned about contaminants affecting any vital parts other than the pan or maybe the oil pickup. Im only assuming my boat would get the milky stuff in the valve covers too. But i dont know for sure. Whatever though. It is probably irrelevent. Either practice seems to work. I was more concerned about feedback on the pump i saw and i apreciate the respones

All the bearing surfaces as well as the cylinder walls, rings and valve components will have old oil residue.

Thats probably a good thing. It should help prevent rust while the engine sits around.

Re: Oil change question

I use the same style as this one but I do use the hose fitting.

Cool. The one i picked up yesterday has fittings but i guess i can see which way works best when it comes time.

Thanx
