Just a quick simple question. I have a 1988 5.0L AlfaOne. I was told that to change the oil I would have to pump the oil out through the dip tube. Is this true? If so where can I find such a tool, and if not where would the oil drain be? Thanks Y'all in advance.

Yes you have to suck it out. I sometimes use this
Jabsco drill pump
It sucks the oil out in a hurry and can be used on your cars to fill differentials and transfer cases.

Alrighty then, Thanx a bunch. I have a pump like that, that was for water, but with the right adapters, will it work?

You will need one with the right kind of impeller, or the oil will cause it to go bad in a hurry. For best results, warm the engine (and oil) to make it easier to pump. Cold oil takes forever to pump out, if it will at all.

Re: Oil Change

Did you check the bottom of the oil pan? I thought I had the same problem, pump the oil out through the dip tube. And I did that the last time I check the oil. One day I thought I give it a try and feel the bottom of the oil pan and would you believ it or not there is the oil pan screw to change oil. The only problem is that it is in the bilge. So now I have to figure how to keep oil out of the bilge. That would be another topic.

You can install a Fumoto valve, or the like, just add a tube to it. Of course, you need to take out the plug that's in there now first. :)

You might also want to lay some disposable diapers on that bag to help contain the oil spillage....

i used to use the garbage bag trick, except i doubled the bags. you have to be sure the oil is going into the inner bag and be dang careful pulling the bags out!! i installed a valve and tube onto the pan for future oil changes. warm the engine, run the tube out the transom, and open the valve. much easier now.

I considered the low or "no cost" solution with garbage bags. After consideration, that it would be highly likely that some oil will eventually get on the carpet, and then would have to deal with the stains. There are many pumps and methods to do this. I ended up choosing the Tempo Oil Bouy. No power needed and contains all the oil. I did it on a warm engine, just prior to winterization. Went very smooth and clean. You pump it up, creating a vacuum, and it sucks the oil out. You could go and work on something else while it is drawing the oil out.

Don't use the bag-in-the-bilge trick. Eventually you'll spill oil in the bilge and then discharge it into the water. Don't be a bad boater.

Like John, I too use a Tempo Oilbuoy. It's extremely E-A-S-Y to use and it's fast as well.

Wow, Thanx everyone. A lot of great tips. Only one more question. How often should I change the oil, my guess would be once a year at winterization time as I wont run the engine as much as a car or truck right??

100 hours or once a year(which ever comes first) is what Mercruiser and Volvo use. And once a year usually comes during winterization.
