HI all,
I have a 1999 johnson 250 hp six cylinder two stroke motor. It sits on a 245 aquasport. It is oil injected. I have put about three hundred hours on the motor in the last year. Over that time period I have found the oil consumption seems to be going up. i went yesterday and I burnt over two gallons of oil in about fifty gallons of gas. At low rpms, trolling, I can see it smoking quite a bit.
The questions are
1. Can the oil injector system go bad and not send the correct amount of oil to the motor?
2. does any one else out there have a similar problem?
3. an you eleiminate the injector and mix manually?
4.Can it be due to wear on the motor? She runs great and does not have any loss of power.

Thanks
Jim

Re: oil consumption help

Jim, There are no adjustments on the OMS pump. Your symptoms indicate an air leak in the gasoline lines, filters or strainer. A main suspect is the main strainer under the airbox. Make sure the oring and gasket are in good shape and the strainer is tight and on straight.

Re: oil consumption help

HI Chris,
Is this a common occurence and can the air leak create that much more oil consumption. I was out again yesterday and it may have been even worse. I will check the fuel lies and the filter coneection. Where is the air box? Anyone else with the same issues?

The Airbox is the plastic cover over the carbs. On my V6, there are 4 rubber straps that hold it on.

I think your going to find that his motor doesn't use that assembly. The only filtration is an in-line filter right before the OMS

Re: oil consumption help

I found a small fuel drip at the clamp next to the primer bubble. Whenj I squeezed it it would drip. I looked elsewhere and could find no opther fuel leaks. Any guess if that is it? I will run the boat again in a few days and check.

If that doesn?t solve the problem the next suspect would be the OMS diaphragm going bad.

Pull the fuel line off the OMS and plug the hole with your finger. Pull the OMS vacuum line off the motor and pull a vacuum on it. It should hold the vacuum until you let off on the fuel side at which time you should hear a click. If it will not hold vacuum, you have a bad OMS diaphragm.
