I have a 1985 Sea Ray w/140 hp Mercruiser engine. As I was cruising through the bay at about 22mph, the boat lost accelaration and began to smoke heavily from the outdrive and the motor itself. All of my gauges were normal until I tapped them. The oil pressure was about 60 and my engine temp was in excess of 200 degrees. I lifted up the engine cover and I heard a pop. I didn't see it but my brother said my oil dipstick went about 100 ft in air. What on earth could have caused this? My oil was good when I left and my anti-freeze was also good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. These boards have helped me tremendously in the past, so hear I am again.

what caused this was a severe over heat. What caused the over heat is, as Charlie says, difficult to know based on the limited info. You need to find out why water was not circulating, either in your heat exchanger.engine (I assume you have a closed fresh water system based on your antifreeze comment) or from the raw water pump. You likely have other damage from the over heat as well. Smoking like that is a bad thing!!! (no pun intended)
