Oil drip

Greetings,

I have a new to me 1984 Evinrude 6 hp. Runs great, gear oil changed twice, looks like good. A couple of days after using it each time, it starts dripping what I believe to be 2 stroke oil (black color, smells somewhat like gas) out of the water intake pickup screen on the lower unit.

Is this normal. Once again, it runs great - it's a one pull wonder all day when starting it. I've tried running across the lake at higher rpms before trailering the boat to blow unburned oil out, does not seem to matter. I'm using 50:1 mix.

Thanks - Tom

Re: Oil drip

Sounds like maybe you're losing some lower unit oil out the top oil seal. You might want to take off the lower unit and see if there's a big foamy lube mess around the impeller housing. I doubt what you're seeing is gas/fuel mixture.

Re: Oil drip

Give it a whiff. If it smells like fuel/oil, no need to worry. You will know if it smells like lower unit lube...
