Oil feed on Yamaha driving me nuts

my 200 hp 2 cycle Yamaha 2003 saltwater will not keep oil in the tank on motor. The level switch on the motor tank appears to be working as it drops engine rpm, and alarms. Override switch will cause motor to pump. Direct power to tank when out of boat provides plenty of flow from pump.

I have had very good advise on the wiring through one of the members, including wire colors, Brown carrying the power, Yellow in the main harness from the key switch supplying power to the circuit.

Emergency switch overrides both level switches and turns on pump. it runs. have removed external tank, changed filter. Found short in motor circuit and repaired it.

From my two other posts on this subject, I have one missing fact. If level switch in external tank is busted and says external tank is empty, will it keep the pump from running?

Can I override this switch. The level switch on the engine is the life saver.

I think this switch is preventing the motor from filling. If so should the two wires be connected or apart? Should I create a complete circuit or not?

Re: Oil feed on Yamaha driving me nuts

well, I am sure that there is a safety factor for the external tank level switch. Some boats may have a tank level indictor on the dash. I do not. If the level switch on the engine dies then the motor is toast anyway. I always carry 4 or 5 gallons of extra oil on board. Should I hit low level at the engine I can refill the external tank quickly. If not then I can always cut the wires that I am overriding below.

The level switch in the external tank can be overridden by completing the circuit back to the engine by connecting the black and black/red wire.

To test pump:
With the engine tank empty. Turn on the ignition (DO NOT START THE ENGINE). The horn will sound, and the external tank pump will fill the motor tank to the top line in 120 seconds. It will then stop.

If you would like to "test" the level switch, gently unseat it and raise it SLOWLY til the pump again starts filling the tank. Reseat.

This is a "temporary fix" however the entire tank assembly retails for around $500 from yamaha.

Thanks.

thanks I do not know that I need it but, thanks. It will take three or four hours to get the tank in and out to just install the switch.

if you can access the tank simply pull the switch out. its a plug in rubber fit.
