Hi, If I install a oil filter relocation kit and drop it into the engine compartment where the bilge is can this cool my oil. There is always water in there especially after a heavy rain storm. Could this work?

Thanks

No it won't really work and that is a bad idea. Oil coolers are basically air-cooled radiators, the oil ilter being in the water won't do much for you but heat of the water. You shouldn't have water left in the bilge either.

Not to mention the rust potential of the filter/housing and the added potential of getting water in the oil and oil in the water.

However, It will cool far more efficiently if you run an extra 35-40 feet of hose on the way to the oil filter and let that hose drag behind the boat in the water. The extra length of hose will really cool it off.

In many Mercruiser engines the oil cooler is connected to the raw water line. It takes cold water from the raw water pump and passes it thru a water-to-oil heat exchanger.

Although dragging a hose behind the boat would work pretty good :eek: (if you use copper tubing),

The OEM oil coolers are usually the most efficient way to cool the oil.

You should be caring about your rotting boat before the oil temp is on the todo list!

Get the water out of the bilge, install a bilge pump with a float switch, and figure out where your leak(s) are. Water belongs outside the boat.

Come on now, he might be onto something here. We could also mount fuel water seperators under water in the bilge and do away with vapor lock in the fuel systems also.;)

Why do you think your oil is too hot in the first place?

I think the OP has not been getting enough fishing in and decided to "troll" here a little bit. With over 200 posts and 2 yrs on the board O think he knew where this was going.

Okay, it was a stupid idea. I was thinking that maybe I could save some money by doing this instead of buying and oil cooler. I am going to install the oil filter relocator because it is a pain to change it now.

I was loosing oil pressure yesterday and I was thinking that it was getting hot. It was running at around 30psi. I checked the gauge sending unit and it was a little loose. I think that the pressure was escaping from there. I will tighten and hopefully that is the reason for low oil pressure.

Thanks

A 4.3 does not need an oil cooler. If you have an oil pressure problem, adding a cooler would be nothing but an attempt to cover up the problem.

I checked the gauge sending unit and it was a little loose. I think that the pressure was escaping from there.

I hate to tell you this, but if the pressure escapes, so does the oil. You would have been spraying oil everywhere to loose pressure of even 5 psi.

I would suggest you install a temporary mechanical gauge and see what is actually going on.

Where I was headed was that you don't need something new when a system begins to malfunction, you need to fix what's broked . . . ;)
