Oil Filter Housing Question

Hi everyone,

The 5.7L / 350 Chevrolet engine that I have uses an external oil cooler. Unfortunately, I do not know the manufacturer of the oil cooler.

I would like to either remove the hoses (that were running to the radiator) and plug the holes or to remove the entire housing and then just screw in the oil filter.

My questions are:

1) If I keep the housing and remove the hoses, how can I determine what size bolt/plug I need to fill that void left by the hoses?.. and what torque settings will I need?

2) If I remove the housing, can I just screw in the oil filter to the block, or is there another part that enables an oil filter to be screwed into the location?

Please see the pic - as it's a close up of what I'm taking about.

Thanks.

looks like hard-lines and thermostat bypass sandwich adapter from a truck

is this motor a truck motor being converted?

unscrew the paper filter (you may call it Fram)

unscrew the adapter nut holding the sandwich bypass

buy a standard oil filter adapter from NAPA

buy a WIX filter from NAPA

You cannot keep the housing without lines to loop back in

2) If I remove the housing, can I just screw in the oil filter to the block, or is there another part that enables an oil filter to be screwed into the location?

Probably Yes, my guess is the housing is made like all others and just screws in

The issue with not having an oil cooler is the oil may get to hot. That said, if this is a truck motor that your putting in a boat, and the previous boat motor did not use an oil cooler, then your probably fine.

Hi everyone,

I picked up the standard oil filter adapter, but are having difficultly removing the oil cooler adapter that is on the engine.

I've removed the filter and the two, long hex bolts that bolted up from the housing, into the block. However, it won't budge and I can't seem to locate any other bolts that might be holding it in place.

I've attached some pics for reference. The pic with the red circles is the location of the bolts that were removed. I took a picture of the center of the unit but can't seem to see a bolt all the way up in there - maybe I'm wrong?

Any tips on removing it would be much appreciated.

Ok, thanks Bondo - if you can see the photos from my post - I just noticed that the center housing has a big 6-sided hex head in the middle - could that be holding it in as well? Or do you think it is just those two long hex-bolts that I've removed?

I bet that unscrews, I had to remove it to use a high flow adapter.

fetch

What I'm pointing to is the short version. Not certain but think if this is removed the adapter will come off. If it does you will need one of these to use the standard remote oil adapter or just to screw on a filter. Not sure but think its a 1/2 allen head

Thanks AllDodge. Damn, more parts to order!

The hex bolt was larger than anything I had in the tool box, so I'll have to look at picking one up.

Hi everyone,

I was able to remove the oil filter adapter (thanks Bondo!) and added the new one on however, the new adapter was not a full, "round" shape. I've attached a pic of it installed for reference.

Is that how it should be?

The previous adapter was completely round where it sealed onto the engine block.

It also did not come with a gasket (the old adapter did, as I had to scrape it all off).... the new adapter DID have a sort of round, rubber seal that was pressed into the housing - is that acceptable? Or do I need to add a gasket (it didn't come with the part).

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Don't know what type or brand the adapter is, but I would not use it. As for the gasket it comes on the oil filter

Here is mine before removing the center piece only. The screws which are on the sides but are only used when a remote adapter is used. Note the plug which yours should not have one. It should have a bypass valve in place. You only need the adapter which was pictired in previous post above

Alldodge - I'm confused by your message. Should I send back the unit that was sent to me? Or do I just need the center hex bolt that has threads on the outside and bolt that into the block?

Your message read to me that I should NOT use the two smaller hex bolts that were supplied with the part that I order (it was all packaged together). The issue is they are the only way that I can seem to hold the adapter in place...

The pic in post 9 is the remote oil adapter. I also removed the center fitting because I was going to install a high flow remote filter head. For normal remote filter heads the fitting is not removed. The fitting is also not removed to just install an oil filter directly on the block.

Also my bypass valve has been removed and plugged due to a high flow oil pump. Normal such as your, your bypass would remain in place.

So what I'm saying is you would just need the small fitting to install IF its not there. Then you can either use one of the remote items as in pic 9, or just install the filter.

Guess I really need to understand what your wanting to do and what you have when the adapter is off

I'll be working on the engine, so I'll take some more pics. I'musing a Royal Purple filter and it seems to fit snug (test fit no oil).
