Oil Filter thread size problem

1983 Bayliner Capri with Volvo AQ125A motor. Took oil filter off to replace and the new OEM oil filter has a 3/4 " internal thread. It does not even touch the threaded bolt that the old filter fastened to. The old filter was a Deutsch D400 and the internal threads only appear to be around 11/16" or about 17 mm. I have scoured the internet and they all say the filter I bought should work but it is way too loose. Has anyone ever had this issue?

Does the engine have a Remote Oil Filter? If so, there is a chance the Remote Adapter is not OEM and uses a Different Filter. The Boat and Engine are almost 40 yrs old... things might not be 'Original'. Does the D400 fit well? Is it about the same size as the Filter you attained?

I look up the Deutsch D400 filter and it comes up as 3/4-16 thread so that is standard. What is the OEM part number filter you picked up?

It is a Volvo [h=1]3517857.[/h] I also bought a NAPA one that is supposed to be a replacement.

From the little bit my dad remembered is when he bought the boat in 1983, he bought a case of 6 filters. Sometime in the 90’s they changed the D400 to a 3/4 “ thread to make them more universal. So the filter that I took off is a circa 1983 filter and the thread is somewhere near 17-19 mm. I will try to find out ghe exact thread and order an adapter so I can use the 3/4 “ filters. Thank You for your help all. My son and I have just rebuilt this boat after it sat for 15 years as a father son project.

I wonder if the nipple was changed, and that could be an option today

Actually all of the 4 cylinder Volvos had the same thread as the Ford and Chrysler engines.

Just for closure on this topic. took a set of calipers and measured the threaded stud on boat. It is a tapered stud. It starts out close to 18 MM on the end, halfway is near 19 mm and by the block it is near 20 mm. I found a website that a guy with a similar problem used a WIX 51307 (NAPA 1307). I bought one and it was identical to the 40 year old filter that I had removed. I worked perfectly. Thank You for everyone's help as you know it gets frustrating when something so simple can cause such headaches.
