Engine: 1979 Mercruiser 140 (4 Cylinder)
i/o
Boat: Reinell 170, 1979

Problem: I have a an oil leak that i am pretty sure is coming from the crankshaft pulley oil seal. When the engine is running there is a very light constant spray of oil coming off the sides of the pulley at the bottom of the engine which connects to the crankshaft. I know how to remove the pulley and the oil seal, but i have no idea where i can get a new one, and what the part number would be. Also what would a parts manual call that specific oil seal. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has done this replacement before, please offer any tips!

Thanks!

Re: Oil flying off crankshaft pulley

I had the same thing happen years ago and it wasnt just the seal that was bad. There was a groove worn in to where the seal sits and there was a kit with a thin sleeve in it to cover the groove.I think it was called a harmonic balance seal kit.Charlie
