Re: Oil for engine
I'll assume you mean a straight 6, 165HP...in which case:
I didn't use anything to "flush" with per se...I drained the block, manifold, and inlet water hose. I used compressed air to blow out all three(although it's probably not necessary), closed the block drain(after removing the thermostat/cover/outlet hose to exhaust manifold) and filled all three with RV/Marine anti-freeze until full(Block)/running out of the stern(Exhaust manifold,Fresh water inlet). I left the thermostat cover/thermostat, and outlet hose(attatched to housing, running to manifold) off just incase there's any expansion during the winter.
It took about 3 gallons and 30 minutes to do the whole job. Oh...I made sure the boat was tilted back when I drained everything...then leveled it before I filled.
As for oil...I used 5 Qts of Citgo SAE 30 and a Purolator filter...Since I don't use my boat in cool weather a straight weight is all I need. In my case, I was able to buy a small, low profile drain pan to drain the oil(via drain plug) from the motor without needing a suction pump.
I sprayed everything I could see with a light coat of WD-40, wiped the bilge clean, and removed the valve cover as I plan on checking the valve lash also.
I pulled the sterndrive off and replaced the impeller also. I bought a Black and Decker Workmate to hold it...and plan on leaving it off and in the basement until spring, then I'll fill it with some 80/90 gear oil.
