Oil for engine

I have decided to winterize my 165 HP Mercruiser this year.
I am new at this with limited mechanic skills.
I have watched uTube and bought the needed stuff to use antifreeze for the flush.
And so what type of oil do I use on this engine after I have done all this?
I know, it is elementary, and so am I.
Thanks.

Re: Oil for engine

Do you have a manual? Do you know what weight oil yo use? After that use whatever you like best! I do use quicksilver brand products on my boat though...

Re: Oil for engine

I'll assume you mean a straight 6, 165HP...in which case:

I didn't use anything to "flush" with per se...I drained the block, manifold, and inlet water hose. I used compressed air to blow out all three(although it's probably not necessary), closed the block drain(after removing the thermostat/cover/outlet hose to exhaust manifold) and filled all three with RV/Marine anti-freeze until full(Block)/running out of the stern(Exhaust manifold,Fresh water inlet). I left the thermostat cover/thermostat, and outlet hose(attatched to housing, running to manifold) off just incase there's any expansion during the winter.

It took about 3 gallons and 30 minutes to do the whole job. Oh...I made sure the boat was tilted back when I drained everything...then leveled it before I filled.

As for oil...I used 5 Qts of Citgo SAE 30 and a Purolator filter...Since I don't use my boat in cool weather a straight weight is all I need. In my case, I was able to buy a small, low profile drain pan to drain the oil(via drain plug) from the motor without needing a suction pump.

I sprayed everything I could see with a light coat of WD-40, wiped the bilge clean, and removed the valve cover as I plan on checking the valve lash also.

I pulled the sterndrive off and replaced the impeller also. I bought a Black and Decker Workmate to hold it...and plan on leaving it off and in the basement until spring, then I'll fill it with some 80/90 gear oil.

Take your pick as long as it is the proper weight.
I am a big Mobil 1 or Amsoil fan. Tuff to beat mobil 1 which can be had at any wally world, as can the good quicksilver h/p drive lube. Best price in town.

Here is what Mercruiser recommends.

If you aren't going to use what Mercruiser recommends, then here are a few links to other oil threads to help assist you in choosing your oil.
They all come down to the same thing, people posting something like
"I use ___(Fill in the blank)___ and it works great"
