I just got an older boat with an OMC 800 stringer I/O drive and am getting ready to do an oil change on it. Is there a reason GL5 gear oil can not be used in the place of GL4? Still figuring things out since it is my first boat and just don't want to mess it up.

I don't know GL ratings very well, but I believe most marine gear lubes are GL5 now. If you're a true OMC 800, then you can get any marine gear lube and use it in both the upper and lower (I typically used the SAE 90 stuff I could buy at the local auto parts store). If you've got an electric shift by chance, the lower unit must have type C.

Welcome aboard.
