If money was not a consideration, only quality, what oil should I run thru my 1978 115HP Johnson??? Also from a practical point, what would be the most cost effective/quality oil to use??? Although its an old engine, the hours are still light on her (under 300).

THANKS

Hi, Boilermaker.

You will get a lot of opinions on this. Mine is that you will get good performance at best value with Wal Mart SuperTech TC-W3 outboard oil.

Good luck. :)

Anything you get now will be better than what was available back then.

WOW>> I remember my dad ALWAYS used OMC gold cans, saying it was the only oil recommended. I refloated the boat last fall, after mny years of sittin', and then having a dealer check it all over & tune it.
I was using WEST MARINE s TC-3W but was concerned with residue out the exhust & carbs, that I don't remember from years ago.
I dont mind spending some money for the "BEST">>>but if it just P*ssin' money away, I would like to get the best for the application.
Are all the TC-3W's the same????

I'll try and stay out of the "hype" in this post, so I will tell you J/E XD-25 would be "The best" oil for the buck, and protection of your engine.

Re: Oil for older 115HP

Starting in 2003, I used Pennzoil Marine Synthetic Blend Premium Plus TC-W3. The motor is a 1976 115HP Johnson. The oil cost me 12.50 for 1 gallon.

I troll on Cape Cod Bay. I have always used OMC oil before. I always considered the build-up on my plugs to be a natural thing so I replaced or cleaned them and bought them by the dozen.

2003 was mind boggling: I could not foul the plugs. My boat got out of the hole faster than ever, and I ended up the season at 135 psi per cylinder compression.

I am sure that others must have had similar experience with synthetics, but this old f is not going to change until someone comes up with a better product.

Walleyehed and Ezeke have great advise as to using a Synthetic blend! However I like full Synthetics Myself, You have to decide if the extra cost is worth it to you!! I had an early 85 V4 evenrude that I ran the H*ll out of on full synthetic on a 15' Bass Boat in tournaments for two years, It worked wonders for that engine! It had a lot of hours on it when I got it and suffered NO ill effects from changing over!

At least use a Partial Synthetic!! Oh, Use a synthetic lower unit oil too!!

Any decent quality TCW-3 oil will be fine. An engine of your vintage will love the new stuff.
Happy boating!

I'll put a "Ditto" on the lower unit syn-lube.....that's one area that gets neglected for lube quality.
