OIL FROM PROP

I own twin yamaha 150 saltwater series. I fogged both motors yesterday and noticed this morning there was oil dripping out of the prop. I thought maybe this was the fogging fluid but the other motor did not have any. I went to drain the lower unit gear oil and found there was not any in there. Just recently bought the boat and fished a few times with no trouble. motor ran fine while fogging it. any ideas ?

I do not know if you know this but You fill, with outboard in vertical position, from lower oil plug until it come out oil in upper airvent/oil level plug - then it is full and You screw in airvent/oil level plug and then lower oil plug (new gaskets on the plugs preferably).
Check in Your Yamaha Owner's Manual for this procedure.

I suggest you at least have a Yamaha outboard service center have a look at this problem, if it is a problem.

/Bo

Re: OIL FROM PROP

Hey Bo, Thanks for getting back to me. did have the outboard in a vertical position. both upper and lower plugs were out. no oil came out. jst a very small amount of water. I had flushed the motors the day before.also fogged them. I drained the port motor fine. the starboard is the one with the oil dripping fom the prop. I noticed this today. a small puddle was under the prop

hello
did you pull the props and service the shaft splines and inspect the bearing carrier assy with a flashlight? there are seals at the propshaft that can leak and an oring at the fwd end of the bearing carrir that will leak sometimes.
if No oil and some water its time to remove the unit and pull the propshaft and drive shaft housings to inspect for gear/bearing damage and then reseal.
good luck and keep posting

Re: OIL FROM PROP

Hi again,

I'm not aware of more than two ways oil can leak out of the gearcase:
1) lower oil plug not tight.
2) bearing housing with O-ring(s) etc, in front of prop, leaking.

I would check 2) at a Yamaha outboard service center and have them look at this problem and maybe make a pressure/vacuum test.
