oil in barrel

while working on motor in barrel is it common to have drops of oil on top of water. when i pulled the motor out of water instead of plain water coming out of drain holes i'm getting a thick oily residue draing back out. the water spitting out of the motor is clear.

That's normal. There's a bit of unburned and burned oil residue in 2 stroke exhaust. My motors all make a bit of a mess in the barrel when they've been run for any length of time.
