Oil in Bilge

Posted a question a while ago about finding an engine oil leak. Was certain it was coming from the engine. Suggestion of putting down absorbent pads was a good one. Had boat in shop to have the bellows changed. While they were doing it they also changed a seal on top of stern drive as well as gimble bearing. They said the gimble bearing was soaked in oil. Brought boat home then figured I'd use the absorbent pad idea while boat was out of water to find oil leak. Ran motor for 20 minutes or so with muffs on and no sign of oil anywhere. My question is could the oil I was seeing have come from the stern drive through drive shaft? Thinking back, bilge had a sweet smell from the oil more like gear oil. Have a 120 HP Mercrusier.
