Oil in Discharge Water

I own a 1989 Yamaha 9.9hp outboard, model FT 9.9EF. Last year while winterizing it, I let the discharge water empty into a bucket I happen to have handy (I was using a water hose on a cowl for the supply). Afterward I noticed a dark oily (or grease?) film all around the inside of the bucket. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Or if the motor has always done this. Perhaps I'm just noticing it because I happen to use the bucket to catch the water.

In any case, should I worry about this? Does this point to a bigger more serious problem? How would oil/grease get in the discharge water? I welcome any opinions or advice.

Welcome to iboats ..... it is not actually in the discharge water but in the exhaust blowing out the prop, this is normal and nothing to worry about ....

deejaycee_2000,

Thanks for the reply! This may sound like a dumb question, but where again is the exhaust coming from? I had the motor mounted on a wooden stand with the water hose cowl hooked up to the intake ports. The bucket catching the discharge water was sitting on the ground off to the side of the prop (and a little bit lower). Does the exhaust come out of the prop housing or up near the engine housing?

yes the exhaust comes out the prop housing and a little out at the top near the engine housing ..... so you saying the only water you collected in the bucket was from the pee stream only?

Yes, that's correct. But I'm thinking that perhaps the bucket was close enough to the exhaust to have caught the oil from the exhaust. It's just that the oil film was so even around the inside of the bucket, I figured the oil had to be in the water.

In any event, I just got the motor out for the season (yeah I'm late) and started it up. She seems to run fine - exhaust coming from the two spots you said. I let the pee stream fall on the ground, and for now I'm not going to worry if there's oil or not. Your first reply makes sense to me.

Thanks.
