Oil in Exhaust boot

I have a Volvo 171 hp I/O with a volvo penta 290 sp outdrive. It was fogged and winterized in October 03. I noticed some oil on the bottom of the big lower, I believe, exhaust boot. I removed it and inside the boot, I found greenish water (probably the winterizer fluid) and some oil, smells like gear lube. Not alot of it was in there, maybe appox 2 Tablespoons. Is this just the oil from winterizing, or do I have a problem?

Gear lube can oly get in there from a crack. Clean it out see if it gets back in. By the way Volvo says 10-30 motor oil is fine for your drive.

A crack in what? where? Inside the engine? Doesnt that port go from the exhaust manifolds in the inboard engine straight to the exhaust out in the outboard? I not 100% sure it is gear lube. I doesnt have the consistancy of lube, this is more like oil

It's all the Oil you poured down the Carb during Winterization......

Good point, but I didnt do the winterization. I had a marina do it for me. I thought fogging was using an oil mist, not pouring pure oil down the carbs, or am I wrong?

Hello, Fogging can be done either way. You can use straight motor oil poured carefully down the carb with a heavy dose after a minute to kill the engine. Or you can use a fogging spray. I agree with Bondo. It more than likely came from fogging. Green water came from automotive glycol antifreeze. Marina should be using pink or blue antifreeze (not toxic to fish, water or the environment) Run the unit on the muffs in spring before you launch. (don't want the green antifreeze getting into the lake or ocean) You will flush away the oil and antifreeze as spent water from the raw water system flushes through the exhaust bellows. Good luck!

You're taking my comment alittle Too Literally.....
When doing the Fogging process,
Relatively Speaking, Youre Dumping Oil Down the Carb.......
Whether Sprayed, or Poured....
You're Still Over-Oiling the motor,
And there's Going to be Oil Residue in the System, from the Carb, to the Tailpipe....

I did think it might be fogging oil, and it probably is. I was thinking perhaps a crack in the drive exhaust housing, but I've never seen a Volvo do that. It's probably fogging oil. Like i said clean it up, run it, see if it keeps reappearing.

recapture the antifreeze properly. dont run it on the muffs to dump it out. Recapture it and then run it on the muffs to rinse any little bit left in the engine.

Checked with the marina that winterized it. It is fogging oil. The boot had a small hole in it which let it drip out onto the underside of it. Changed the boot and everything is ok. They also assured me that the winterizing fluid is marine safe. Thanks for all the help everybody!

I use Prestone Low-Tox, a poly glycol antifreeze that is green.
