I am newbie boat owner, which is quickly becoming a passion. The focus of my attention is a 1990 Four Winns with an OMC Cobra. I know nothing of what I am looking at when it comes to the drive- the engine looks like my old Pinto :)

Last night when I put the baot back in the water, I noticed black oil coming to the surface about one "glug" every 5 to 10 seconds. I dock the boat close to the launch, but on the short ride nothing appeared out of normal.

Big plans for this weekend, and now I am concerned that I may do damge to the object of my affection. Anayway I can tell if this a "big problem" about to do major harm, or "no big deal"

Thanks for the help
First thing to do is to find out EXACTLY where it's coming from, so that you or one of us can diagnose what it is, and fix the problem. First find out if it's engine oil, drive oil or hydraulic fluid. Once you find out what kind of oil/fluid it is, then start looking for possible leak spots or symptoms of the engine leaking/burning oil out the exhaust. I blew an oil seal on my Alpha One outdrive a few weeks ago, and it dumped the entire contents of the oil out.....good thing I noticed it before I burned up the outdrive. Keep a close eye on ALL of your fluid levels till you figure it out.
