Oil Injection Question

I have a 2004 Merc 50 ELPTO. I have a question about oil injection. Is there anything that needs to be serviced annually in regards to the oil injection (such as is there a pump that needs to be replaced, plastic gears that need to be replaced, ect.)? Or does the motor simply suck the oil in along with the gas. I have been told by a couple of people that there is something (possibly a pump)that needs to be replaced about every three years. Thanks for your time.

a manual, you need a manual.

i dont know your particular engine, but yes, the pumps need inspected as does the hoses and tubing. some of the older mercs used nylon gears driven off the cranks, and they wore out good and easily.

Re: Oil Injection Question

Our 2003 115 classic 4 cylinder is oil injected and I wonder how the two cylinders that are shut off when the engine is running below 1800 rpm, get lubricated. I'm concerned because our marina mechanic thinks the engine is about to "puke" any day due to suspicious engine noise (bearing)at idle and when suddenly throttling down off plane.

Re: Oil Injection Question

Surely some of you motor guru's can help me out. I do not want to call a dealer as I know they would tell me that they need to check it out every year or so. I need an honest answer.

Thanks,
Randy

Re: Oil Injection Question

RM58, if your not having any problems w/ it I won't worry about it. Like they say if it not broke don't fix it. But as far as maintanence, sure every year when you winterize your motor drain the oil, spray your prefered corrosion protectant. But as far as any pumps depending on your motor & I'm not sure wich one you have, your oil is injected into the cylinders from a pump that runs off crank pressure. The only way to tell if your pump is not working. 1.) Your oil resevoir stays @ the same level, but I think before you ever noticed this you motor is deep sixed ( dead ). 2. A smoking engine, ( not excessively ) but your normal idle tells you have oil being injected. But other than that, thats all you can do. Just your normal routine maintanence keep good oil in the tank & drain oil during storing. And you should have any problems. After a few years IF you want too & like myself I replace parts every few year even if they are'nt broken. Its called preventative maintanence. But hey I like my motor to last me, lord knows they are'nt cheap. Later & good luck.

P.S. Get yourself a manual. That thing is like a boaters bible. It tells you everything. You would be suprised on whats inside one of them. My wife could work on my outboard, they're that detailed.
