I just bought a boat with a Mercury 75elpto. It has oil injection, I've been reading horror stories about oil injection failing. My question is would I be better off bypassing the injection and pre-mixing? Whether it makes any difference or not the boat has a built in tank.
Thank You in Advance.

I believe the oil pump is driven by a plastic gear on the crankshaft.----Big $$ item to replace.----I do not believe the system has a " no oil injecting " warning horn.------Motor will come to a dynamic halt should oiling system fail !

Others can give a more accurate answer, but I think some of it depends on the age of the motor. I had a mid 80's black max that had injection removed. It was very smoky as the mix was consistent regardless of engine speed. I "upgraded" to an 01 that still has injection and I have a lot less smoke, especially at low speed.

oil injection on 75-125 3 and 4 cylinders injects at 80 parts fuel to 1 oil at idle and increases oil to 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil at WOT. I took the pump drive shaft out of my 10 year old 90 and premixed 50:1 so I could sleep better....no other reason. I donated the boat to a worthy cause and some years later got back into boating with the same year model 115 and it still has the injection system and I still sleep ok. Suit yourself.
