Today while trying to look at my trim/tilt woes I noticed oil coming from where my outdrive connects to my boat. It smells like motor oil. Where could this be coming from?? I have a '68 Mark Twain with a 120 MC.

Re: oil leak

Hey WS if who give a little info on your trim problems and where exactly the oil is leaking from might be able to shed a little knowledge, another thought is your oil leak and trim issue may be related.........

Re: oil leak

The trim motor conk out completely, so I am replacing it. The oil leak is coming right from where lower unit connects to the transom. There is some caulking there. Actually there is caulkin the whole way around the outside. There is absolutely no oil on the inside. My oil level seems to be fine so far. I do not understand how this problem could be related with my trim (but then again that is why I am not the expert).

Except for the fact that when I checked my trim pump for fluid it was completely empty. The oil smelled like motor oil so I did not put them together. But I do know that you can use different kinds of oiols for the trim. So I guess it really could be related. What do I check???

Re: oil leak

It is possible that your o/d has a leak in the upper seal at the ujoint.I just had mine replaced. My bellows was full of gear oil.If the smell of the oil is strong enough to smell without touching it and putting it up to your nose, then it is most likely gear oil.By the way,if it is gear oil that means you also have a leak in a bellows.Check your gear oil level. Re: oil leak

In my 1970 Penn Yan owner's manual it says to use SAE20 motor oil to fill the trim pump. Maybe the oil from the pump drained out somehow and that is what your seeing?
George

Re: oil leak

WS look at the distribution block were the stainless steel trim hoses connect too then look for were the lines go from the pump to the block from the inside of the boat,I realize you don't have a oil leak inside, but it could be possible that your oil leak in in the distribution block in between the inner and outer gimble ring. I would also look into Charlies suggestion about the upper gear case seal.
